چکیده

This paper presents a very efficient method for vectorizing and labeling very large raster hypsographic map images. By extending the contour tree (Freeman and Morse, 1967) to a contour graph, open contour lines and carrying contour lines can be handled. The ambiguities of the topological relationships among contour lines are resolved using map structure information, i.e., elevation tags and index contour lines. Contour graph is constructed and processed efficiently by introducing index contour graph. By using a sequential extraction algorithm (Agrawala and Kulkarni, 1977) for vectorization, attributes for contour lines, such as line width, and elevation tag(s), are extracted efficiently. Although it was developed primarily for USGS 1:24,000 hypsographic maps as part of the GISOM project at The Ohio State University Center for Mapping, the method also is applicable to other scale USGS hypsographic maps. We have applied the algorithm successfully to raster images with pixel size of 19,320 by 25,400. On average, it can correctly vectorize more than 98 percent of the contour lines and correctly label more than 90 percent.

Raster to Vector Conversion in a Map Interpretation System

This paper describes the two components: thinning and vectorization, at the front end of a Geographic Information System. The raster dataset associated with a map is very large. A small D-sized drawing gives a 120 Mpixel document. The amount of page faults encountered by a typical conventional thinning algorithm is so large that the run time is dominated by disk 110 time. The Contour Generation...

Benchmarking: An Interactive Tool for Vectorization of Raster Images

Methods have been presented to compute the vector representations of the arbitrary lines in a bilevel raster image. The image may have varying line width and irregular boundaries. Moreover, at line crossings and branches, the user has an opportunity to choose the direction in which line tracking may be continued. The usual method involves thresholding, thinning, segmentation, polygonalization, ...

Contour Lines Recognition from Raster Topographic Maps

Map digitization is still an ongoing research in development of GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, military, urban planning and etc. Majority of recent approach, either associates with human interaction or semi-automated process are insufficient in various aspects. There are usually time-consuming, inefficient, and shown inaccuracies in digitized data. This research is intended to develop an ...

Contour-based Images: Representation, Creation and Manipulation

This thesis proposes a novel image primitive — the diffusion curve. This primitive relies on the principle that images can be defined via their discontinuities, and concentrates image features along contours. The diffusion curve can be defined in vector graphics, as well as in raster graphics, to increase user control during the process of art creation. The vectorial diffusion curve primitive a...

Generating Named Road Vector Data from Raster Maps

Raster maps contain rich road information, such as the topology and names of roads, but this information is “locked” in images and inaccessible in a geographic information system (GIS). Previous approaches for road extraction from raster maps typically handle this problem as raster-to-vector conversion and hence the extracted road vector data are line segments without the knowledge of road name...
